Best Time to Surf in Lombok: Month-by-Month Guide

If you're planning a surf trip to Lombok, one of the first questions you'll ask is: when should I go?

The good news is that Lombok — and Gerupuk Bay in particular — surfs year-round. Unlike some destinations that go flat for months at a time, the south coast of Lombok has enough exposure to different swells and enough sheltered bays to offer rideable surf in every season. But that doesn't mean all months are equal.

Here's our honest, month-by-month breakdown:

DRY SEASON: May to October

This is the peak surf season in Lombok. Southwest swells generate consistent, quality waves across the south coast, and the offshore winds in the mornings create clean, groomed conditions.

For intermediate and advanced surfers, this is prime time. Breaks like Outside Gerupuk, Mawi and Desert Point (Bangko-Bangko) come alive during the dry season and offer some of the best waves in Indonesia.

The downside: it's busier. Lineups at Inside Gerupuk can get crowded during peak months (July and August especially), and accommodation books out further in advance.

Best months in dry season for: June, September, October — good swell, cleaner conditions, slightly fewer people than peak July/August.

WET SEASON: November to April

The wet season gets an unfairly bad reputation. Yes, it rains — usually in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours. But what the wet season brings is smaller, glassier, cleaner waves — and far quieter lineups. For beginners and early intermediate surfers, this is often the better time to visit. Inside Gerupuk is consistent, manageable and uncrowded. Morning sessions can be as good as anything you'd find in the dry season — you just won't be chasing overhead barrels.

Lombok's famous wet season light is also something special. Mist on the hills, turquoise water, soft morning sun. It photographs beautifully. Best months in wet season for beginners: December, January, February — warm water, regular surf, quiet lineups.

MONTH BY MONTH SUMMARY

January – Smaller, consistent waves. Quiet. Great for beginners.

February – Similar to January. Often glassy mornings.

March – Swell starts building slightly. Transition month.

April – Variable conditions as dry season approaches. Can be excellent.

May – Dry season begins. Swell picking up. Great time to visit.

June – Consistent swell, clean conditions. One of our favourite months.

July – Peak season. Biggest crowds, but also biggest waves.

August – Similar to July. Busy, but the surf is consistent.

September – Crowds thin out, swell still consistent. Excellent month.

October – Often underrated. Good waves, fewer tourists.

November – Transition back to wet season. Variable, but often fun.

December – Wet season in full swing. Quieter lineups, smaller surf.

What this means for your booking

If you're a beginner or first-time visitor to Lombok: don't stress about the season. Gerupuk works for you year-round. The wet season is often better for learning — smaller waves, more patience in the lineup, and less pressure.

If you're intermediate or above and chasing quality waves: aim for May to October, and book early for July and August.

At Semeton Surf, we run our 6-day surf camp in Gerupuk every single week of the year — because there's never a week when the bay isn't worth surfing. If you're unsure when to come, message us. We'll tell you honestly what to expect during your dates.
