Surfing in Gerupuk, Lombok: A Complete Guide (All Levels)
If you're planning a surf trip to Lombok and haven't heard of Gerupuk yet, you're about to fall in love with it.
Gerupuk is a small fishing village on Lombok's south coast, about 35 minutes from the airport. It sits on a horseshoe-shaped bay that contains around six distinct surf breaks — some of the most reliable, accessible and varied waves in all of Indonesia.
Whether you've never paddled out before or you're hunting for your next progression challenge, surfing in Gerupuk has something for you. This guide covers everything: the breaks, the seasons, how to get here, and what to expect.
Why surf in Gerupuk, Lombok?
Gerupuk's bay is unusually sheltered compared to many Indonesian surf destinations. This means it works in more conditions, more of the time — with different corners of the bay firing on different swells, tides and winds.
Unlike Bali's beaches, most of the breaks in Gerupuk are accessed by a short boat ride from the village — a process that takes about five minutes. Local boat operators line the shoreline from early morning.
The water is warm year-round (around 27–29°C), the village is laid-back and genuine, and the lineup culture is generally friendly. If you're looking for an alternative to the crowds of Kuta Bali or Canggu, Gerupuk is exactly that.
The surf breaks in Gerupuk Bay
Here's a breakdown of the main spots you'll hear about when surfing in Gerupuk:
Inside Gerupuk
The most popular and beginner-friendly break in the bay. Inside Gerupuk is a mellow, forgiving wave that peels consistently in almost any season. It's the spot we use most for first-time surfers and early intermediates — long rides, lots of opportunity, low consequences if you wipe out. The lineup can get busy during peak months, but the wave is long enough that there's usually room for everyone.
Outside Gerupuk
A more powerful right-hander further out in the bay, suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Outside Gerupuk needs a bigger swell to light up, but when it does, it's one of the best waves in Lombok — hollow sections, longer rides, and far fewer people than the inside break.
Don Don
A fun, punchy wave that works well in both dry and wet season. Good for beginners and intermediate surfers wanting to work on turns and timing. It is one of the rare A-frame waves in Gerupuk, definitely worth a session when it's on.
When is the best time to surf in Gerupuk?
The short answer: any time of year. Gerupuk Bay works 365 days a year, which is why local surf schools run camps and lessons every week without exception.
Dry season (May to October): Bigger, more consistent swells from the south and southwest. Offshore winds in the morning create clean, groomed conditions. This is the peak season for intermediate and advanced surfers, and when waves like Outside Gerupuk really come alive.
Wet season (November to April): Smaller, glassier waves — often cleaner in the mornings after overnight rain. Perfect for beginners and surfers focused on technique rather than power. Lineups are noticeably quieter, and the light in Gerupuk during this season is extraordinary.
Our honest recommendation: if you're a beginner or early intermediate, don't avoid the wet season. The conditions are often ideal, prices are lower, and you'll have more space to yourself.
How to get to Gerupuk from Lombok Airport?
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is around 20-30 minutes from Gerupuk, depending on traffic. Since there are no grabs or gojeks in South Lombok, the most straightforward option is a fixed-price transfer to Gerupuk that costs around IDR 250,000k. Many surf camps — including Semeton — include airport transfers in their packages.
To get around, we recommend getting your local hostel/homestay to arrange transport for you if you require transport. Even better, if you're comfortable on a scooter, you can rent one from Gerupuk or Kuta for around IDR 80,000 per day.
Surfing in Gerupuk with a local surf school
While it's possible to hire a boat and paddle out independently, surfing in Gerupuk is significantly better with a local guide or coach — especially on your first visit.
Local guides know exactly which spot is firing on any given day, which corner of the bay to head to depending on the tide and wind, and how to read the specific currents in Gerupuk. They also provide a level of social licence in the lineup that solo travellers don't automatically have.
At Semeton Surf, our coaches led by ISA certified head coach Saban, go in the water with you at every session — not just as guides, but as active coaches giving real-time feedback on your surfing. If you're serious about improving during your time in Lombok, this is the difference between a good holiday and a transformational one.
We run 6-day surf camps in Gerupuk every week, as well as private and semi-private lessons for those with fewer days available. Message us on WhatsApp if you'd like to know more about joining a camp or booking a lesson during your Lombok trip.
